LOCATION LOCATION LOCATION!
Our shop is in the historic Bell Inn Building owned by the Westmorland Historical Society. Of historical significance, the Bell Inn is one of New Brunswick’s oldest surviving stone buildings. It was once an Inn on the Great Westmorland Stagecoach Route and is a well preserved example of early Colonial Style architecture. We also respectfully acknowledge that we are located in the traditional unceded lands and waters of the Mi’kmaq.
AN AMAZING PLACE
We're only 8 kms from the internationally reknown haven for shorebirds in Atlantic Canada where 85% of the world population of Semipalmated Sandpipers come to rest on the pebble beach and gain nourishment from the mudflats. Johnson’s Mills Shorebird Reserve and Interpretive Center has a spectacular view of Shepody Bay. It's on the Ramsar list of Wetlands of International importance and is Canada's first Western Hemisphere Shorebird reserve. When Sandpipers are roosting they can be disturbed by predators and lift to the sky in flocks and perform a spectacular arial ballet designed to confuse predators such as the Peregrine Falcon. This output of energy burns important fat stores they need to make the rest of their journey so every effort is made to ensure humans do not put them at risk. We are proud of the uniqueness of our region, its culture and history. We promote the importance of conservation and sustainability in the region by sharing information on local conservation efforts.
OUR STORY
Peep & Keep Ecotique is a dream realized of long time friends and entrepreneurs Debbie Wiggins-Colwell and Kara Becker. As proud residents of Dorchester, they often felt the historic (former Village) of Dorchester was their little slice of heaven. Quiet, peaceful and quaint in the countryside. Full of history of the first inhabitants of the Mi'kmaq, Acadians, and later Yorkshire settlers. The name Peep & Keep Ecotique is derived from “Peep” a name well known in the birding community describing several species of Sandpipers. The sandpiper also symbolizes adaptability, resourcefulness and perseverance. You can also come into our shop for a quick look or “Peep” Our second name “Keep” denotes our focus on reclaimed and repurposed and the treasures you will find and want to keep!
